Galveston County residents, this is your chance to show your support for a dog park (and more). Please go to the Galveston Country Parks Board Survey and complete the survey, it doesn’t take but 5-10 minutes. And more than just the dog park, they bring up a lot of suggestions and ideas and ask for your input as well. If you haven’t been able to make it to any of the outreach meetings, this is your chance. Please let your friends and neighbors know. It is only through involvement that we are able to make a difference.

Vote in League City City Council Election

Tomorrow is the last day for voting in this years city council election. With an average turn-out in League City at about 3,000 in a city of over 75,000, well, you do the math. If your dogs could vote, I am sure they would.

I encourage you to learn about the candidates and issues and please, go vote. Tell your neighbors to vote and tell your friends.

League City Early Voting

Early voting is underway in League City. Up for grabs are two council position (one uncontested) and a whole slew of propositions. Of special interest are prop 1 and 4.

Proposition No. 1. Shall the City adopt the Council-Manager form of government to provide the appointment of a City Manager who shall be the chief administrative and executive officer of the City?

Proposition 4 reads:

Proposition No. 4. Shall Article II, Section 17, paragraph 2 of the City Charter be amended to provide that the Mayor will have the exclsive power to appoint offiers for boards, commissions and agencies of the City, subject to comfirmation of City Council?

This one concerns me because if passed and Joanna Sharp (3 million dollars for Butler Longhorn Museum but no on dog park) is elected Mayor Toni Randall will have a solid voting block on City Council. In my opinion, in League City, I am not comfortable with the words mayor and exclusive even being in the same sentence.

And that brings me to my next topic. Joanna Sharp is running against Tommy Garland for council position 7. In all honesty, I can not say that I know much about Joanna Sharp. I know that she has been on the parks board and has indeed done a lot of volunteering in city government. But I also know that she is a very good friend of the mayor and that she is dead set against a dog park in League City. I did email her but I have not heard back from her. View more here.

Tommy Garland on the other hand not only emailed back but also met with me and Charlotte Moore for an hour and a half to talk about his politics and beliefs and hope for League City. We are not special, he will me with and talk to anybody that wants to hear from him. He was a cop for 17 years, 8 in League City and he managed to do some pretty awesome things, the Crime Scene Unit for one.

But most important is to get out and vote. League City has over 75,000 citizens and not more than 3,000 (of the same people) ever vote. We can do better and if you want better for your city, VOTE.

From the League City website about hours and location: Early Voting will be held in the Johnny Arolfo Civic Center, 400 West Walker Street, Monday through Thursday April 26 through April 29 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Friday April 30 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and noon, Saturday May 1 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and Monday and Tuesday May 3 and May 4 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. People 65 years of age or older, and others who qualify to vote by mail, may request an application for a ballot by mail by contacting Barbara F. Long, City Secretary, 300 West Walker Street, League City, Texas 77573. Completed and signed applications for ballot by mail must be received by noon on Friday, April 30, 2010.

League City Dog Park – Important City Election

When a website is scanned by Google it takes a little snapshot of it. It doesn’t change the snapshot until it scans it again, even if the site has changed. I did a search, trying to learn more about Joanna Sharp who is running in League City for City Council Position 7. I put in “Joanna Sharp” +”League City” +”Dog Park”. I didn’t find anything telling until the second page of results and then I read this “Mar 24, 2010 … For my Love of League City, I am running for Council this year. … In case youíre wondering, I voted against the Dog Park, as something we …”, Google’s snapshot of her website. I clicked over to her site but it has since been edited. You can search for yourself of you can view the screen grab here.

Trot for Spot | Saturday, 10.10.2009

The Animal Alliance of Galveston County (AAGC) supports the community by providing low cost spay & neuter surgeries. 100% of the money raised funds programs to end pet overpopulation in our area.

Walk information: Participants collect pledges from friends, relatives, colleagues and neighbors to raise money for the AAGC clinic. On Oct 10th, everyone brings their pets to the walkathon to complete laps around a 1 mile course through beautiful Walter Hall Park (on Hwy 3 between NASA Road 1 and 518). Cool off at doggy day spas along the way and visit with other pet owners! After the walk visit vendors at their booths. The official welcome will be at 9am with the walk beginning at 9:30 and fun activities are planned for the entire day.

We have added five new supporters today. Kwik Kar in League City, Rainforest Pets, Pawsh Dog House, Safari Animal Care Centers, and The Beauty Bistro. Rainforest Pets, Pawsh Doghouse, Safari and The Beauty Bistro have petitions in their stores and if you are out, please drop in and sign it. Check the Supporters page for details on their locations.

And thank you to all of the League City Community Dog Park Supporters. And a special thank you for BARK9, Fred has been a great help in the efforts to get a dog park up in League City. His website also has a lot of really good informaiton on how you can get involved and there is a great deal of information if you want to learn more.

City Council Meeting 08/11/2009 @ 6PM

If you want to speak to the city council members and the mayor, be at the council chambers by 5:45 on Tuesday August 11 and sign up. When you enter the council chambers just walk to the front and there is a 3 ring binder with the sign-up sheet. You must be a resident of League City and you are allotted 3 minutes. If you have never spoken you can bring handouts or information for council members, there is an overhead projector and even a computer that you can pop a CD into if you have pictures to show. City council is located at 200 West Walker St.

It really isn’t the most exciting thing you can do with a Tuesday night but it is important that the same few people that always show up and speak up not be the only faces and voices that council sees and hears. Let your city council know about your concerns for your city. I hope to see you there.

Also, if you have not signed the electronic petition please do so, please note, you must be a resident of League City. There are a lot of good comments and I am anxious to reach our goal and get this sent it to the City Council and the Mayor.

The next meeting for the League City Dog Park Association will be August 20th at Pepper’s, located at 220 Gulf Frwy S in League City, between 6:00 – 7:30 pm. Please come by to discuss the dog park association and to elect new officers. Please get the word out for everyone to stop by and show your support and get involved. All are welcome to come and get signed up as new members.
